Verification Policy

Important: MedRM performs limited verification. Users are responsible for verifying information about potential roommates.

Institutional Email Verification

Every MedRM account is created with an email address from a recognized medical school, teaching hospital, or university, and access is limited to those addresses. This is a requirement to join, so it applies to all users on the platform.

Institutional email verification confirms two things:

  • Their email domain matches a known institution, for example @ucsf.edu, @clevelandclinic.org, or @brighamandwomens.org
  • They verified ownership of that email by clicking the confirmation link sent to that address when they signed up

Recognized domains include U.S. medical schools (all .edu addresses qualify), major teaching hospitals, and international universities and health systems across Canada, the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, and more.

If your institution isn't recognized yet, email [email protected] and I'll add it.

What MedRM Verifies

MedRM verifies the following:

  • Email domain: Sign-ups are limited to institutional email addresses from recognized schools and hospitals
  • Email ownership: You must confirm you can access the email address you provide
  • Account authenticity: Obviously fake or duplicate accounts are monitored for and removed
  • Test user markers: Test/admin profiles created for quality assurance are internally flagged and separated from real user matching

What MedRM Does NOT Verify

MedRM does NOT perform the following verifications:

  • Professional credentials: Licenses, certifications, and training status are not verified
  • Professional identity: User identity is not confirmed
  • Background checks: Criminal background checks are not conducted
  • Profile accuracy: The accuracy of information users provide (age, specialty, training year, etc.) is not verified
  • Phone numbers: Phone numbers and other contact information are not verified
  • Medical status: Whether users work in healthcare or hold stated roles is not verified

Test Users & Quality Assurance

MedRM may create test user profiles for testing and quality assurance purposes. These test profiles:

  • Are internally marked and separated from real user matching algorithms
  • Do not appear in normal matching results when you're browsing for roommates
  • Are used to test new features and ensure the platform works correctly
  • Are clearly identifiable as test accounts if encountered

If you encounter an obvious test user profile, you can report or block it, though they should never interfere with your normal matching experience.

Your Responsibility

You are responsible for:

  • Verifying that potential roommates are who they claim to be
  • Asking questions and requesting references from matches
  • Conducting your own background research or background checks if desired
  • Making your own decisions about compatibility and trustworthiness
  • Protecting your personal information until you've verified a user's identity

How to Verify a Roommate

Consider taking these steps before committing to a roommate arrangement:

  1. Ask detailed questions about their role, training, and institution
  2. Ask for references from colleagues or past roommates
  3. Verify their email domain matches their stated institution
  4. Search for them online or through professional networks
  5. Ask to do a video call before finalizing arrangements
  6. Request additional verification documents if needed (employee ID, etc.)
  7. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, withdraw from the match.

Fraud & Misrepresentation

If you suspect a user is being fraudulent or misrepresenting themselves:

  • Use the report feature to flag the account
  • Do not share personal information with them
  • Block them to prevent further contact
  • Email [email protected] with details if you believe fraud occurred
